There are mainly 3 types of tournaments in baseball:

1. Knock-out Tournaments: As the name suggests, the teams compete with each other, and the losing team gets knocked out of the tournament. The winning teams then compete with each other.
2. League Tournaments: In league tournaments, the teams compete multiple times with each other, and points are earned by the winning teams. The winning teams compete further with each other, and the team with the maximum points is declared the winner.
3. Combination Tournaments: These types of tournaments are held on zonal levels or as group matches. They are the best option when there is a large number of teams.

What Is A Pool Play In Baseball?

A pool play is a type of league tournament in baseball. In this, all teams are assigned a pool in which they compete with the other teams in the pool. In pool play, the teams are divided into brackets and play round-robin.

The pools or brackets are organized so that each team can compete with every team participating in pool play. The winning team earns a point and then competes with the other team. The team with the maximum points at the end of all the matches is the winner.

There is no compulsion to have only 2 teams, a pool can have more than 2 teams, but each pool must consist of an equal number of teams. The matches are played on all courts available in the tournament.

The teams first need to make a list of the players participating in the pool(Roster players). This ensures smooth gameplay and makes the game more organized and fair. Pool play is a great option when we have a large group of players.

Results In Pool Play

The team with more points at the end of a match wins. But in case of ties, the winners are decided using these rules:

1. 2 Teams Tie: If 2 teams tie for a position, then in the round robin, the team that won between the two is ranked higher and declared the winner. In the case of a random pool, the winning team is the one with the least runs allowed in all the games. Even after this, if the teams are still tied, the team which made the most runs is the winner.

2. 3 Teams Tie: If three teams in a pool tie for the same position-

• The team with a score of 2-0 is the winner, i.e., in the round robin, the team that won against the 2 other teams is declared the winner out of three.
• If all three have an equal score (1-1), the team with the least runs allowed in games against each other is the winner. If 2 teams remain tied after this, the winner amongst them is decided by the 1^st method.
• If all the teams are still tied, then the team with the least runs allowed in all the matches is the winner. If 2 teams remain tied after this, the winner amongst them is decided by the 1^st method.
• Even after considering both situations, if all three teams remain tied, the team with the maximum runs scored in games against each other is the winner. If 2 teams remain tied after this, the winner amongst them is decided by the 1^st method.
• After considering all the above conditions, if the three teams remain tied, the team with the maximum runs scored in all the games is the winner. If 2 teams remain tied after this, the winner amongst them is decided by the 1^st method.

Pool Play vs. Bracket Play

Pool Play In ACC Tournament

In the Atlantic Coast Conference(ACC) Tournament, 12 teams qualify to participate in pool play. The teams are divided into 4 pools, each having 3 teams. The teams within the pool compete with each other in a round-robin format.

The team having the best record qualifies for the semifinals. The semifinal and the final matches are held on a single-elimination basis.
